An Abhorrent Vacuum

When I hear American leftists say that they “live in the belly of the beast,” it sounds to me like an assertion of American exceptionalism more than anything else. The implication seems to be that their struggles in the U.S. are, at the end of the day, the most important ones, since the U.S. is the world’s superpower.
In reality, though, we all live in the belly of the beast. America’s influence is global, supported by a complex network of global agreements. And Americans, who I have found can be quite profoundly myopic and insular, often forget that.
