Becoming Kermit

by Amy Chu

Kermit the Frog in a swirly tunnel. TITLE: Becoming Kermit
A year ago, someone finally recognized me while I was waiting for the T. • Person standing talking to Kermit: EXCUSE ME, ARE YOU KERMIT? • Kermit: YES. YES! I AM KERMIT. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME SOMEONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO TELL. • Person: WELL, I THINK IT'S OBVIOUS! • Kermit: THANK YOU! NEXT YEAR WILL BE EVEN BETTER. • Arrows point to: Missing collar • Skirt???
Amy standing in front of a storefront window - a gnarled, spooky autumnal tree is nearby and a leaf falls off. You'd think that becoming Kermit was a yearlong endeavor, considering I become an incomplete Kermit every year, but the truth is, I often forget about becoming Kermit until it's almost too late. • The week before the transformation, I descend in a frenzied search for that perfect shade of green at every thrift store in the area, though I've never actually bought a piece of clothing for the sole purpose of becoming Kermit.
