When I finished undergrad in 2021, I quickly discovered that “rent eats first,” as housing costs gobbled up half of my $4,500 income from a summer internship at the Museum of Fine Arts. Later I found a full-time job working for the Massachusetts state government, where I made twice as much per hour ($58,000 in 2022). My new salary gave me a bit more breathing room—about 81 square feet in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

I got a “Covid deal” on housing in a bustling part of the city, and my housemates and I made ample use of our home by becoming the hub among our friends for dinner parties and remote coworking lunch breaks. But food prices had shot up during the pandemic. Eating out was a money sink, but cooking at home was pricey too. I found ways to save.
