In the Blood
fiction by Miles Klee
The following is an excerpt from The Last Year, a longer work of fiction currently in progress. The previous chapter is available here.
I am broke by most definitions.
That is, I am down to my last two weeks of severance pay, and the approximately $450 per week from unemployment, for not as long you’d hope. Only I’ve stopped getting the government money, because I have scraped together two dumbass part-time jobs—one at the book shop on the Sunset Strip, another running a lousy clickbait website over the weekends—enough work to render me ineligible for benefits. That’s because I am terrified of living on assistance in this expensive city while M. works at a different book store, which has never been a living as far as either of us know.
We could sell our own collection of several hundred books. I suspect that would cover about half our groceries for the month.
Keep us breathing fire!
