Ace Goes to Hollywood: Episode 3
by Jack Pendarvis
Ace Goes to Hollywood is a continuing transcript of a ride from Oxford, Mississippi, to Memphis, Tennessee, during which Jack Pendarvis interviewed Ace Atkins about his work on the Pauly Shore film Jury Duty.
Episode 3: Ace’s Big Break!
JACK: Let’s talk about some of the notable people that you met on the Jury Duty set. I believe you had an encounter with Stanley Tucci.
ACE: Stanley Tucci was… should I give away plot points from this, or…?
JACK: Yes.
ACE: All right. Stanley Tucci is in the jury pool but spoiler alert! You can stop reading if you want to. He’s the killer. So he’s on the jury, but he’s actually the real killer that they’re looking for. But I got to know him pretty well. And he was an interesting guy. He was very Stanley Tucci-ish even back then. His sister was on a soap opera, and people would send me—they knew I liked to watch Days of Our Lives, so they would send me, as a joke, soap opera magazines. Occasionally, I would read them on my break on the set, and he was always bugging me to see if his sister was in these magazines.
JACK: I don’t think they were sending you that as a joke. I think you liked to read the soap opera magazines.
ACE: That’s true.
JACK: Why are you… why are you trying to…
ACE: I’m sorry.
JACK: Was Stanley Tucci known at all?
ACE: I don’t think so. I think his biggest thing was when he did Big Night with, uh, Oliver Platt.
JACK: Oh, no, Big Night, pardon me, is with Tony Shalhoub.
ACE: Oh, Tony Shalhoub.
JACK: Please!
ACE: He’s in… but’s he’s in Big Night, right?
