The Taste of Creation

For a long time there was a small purple ice cream cone on the back of my phone, delicately crafted in a child's cross-hatch—a homemade sticker given to me by my nine-year-old daughter. Nestled in the cone, rather than a scoop of something delicious, was the small furry head of a mysterious creature topped with two cute ears and a miniature horn, smiling with its eyes closed, asleep in some pleasant and hopeful dream world.
The whimsy, beauty, and gentle humor of her creation was, and is, a source of constant comfort for me, reminding me of the power of our imaginations, and of what is at stake: Her innocent work of art and the expression of humanity it represents is what generative AI-obsessed technology companies want to appropriate, possess, and ultimately destroy.
OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and the rest understand that the spontaneous act of creation, in all its freedom and unpredictability, is the sacred and all-powerful wall that stands between them and the domination of human culture.
