With Golden Sunshine All Along the Way

by Trevor Alixopulos

Image: a portrait head of the late director David Lynch on a warm turquoise background. 'With Golden Sunshine All Along the Way': While not officially counted among the victims of L.A.'s devastating wildfires, David Lunch succumbed to his emphysema after evacuating his home. Much like LA, I didn't love everything of his I saw, but could not help being beguiled by his audacity and mystery.
Image: the author singing along as he drives a car: 'there'll be blue skies and sunshine all-along-the-way' Caption: Things were pretty bleak in Summer 2020. The whole state was going up in flames. I'd just lost my father. Covid was running riot. An obscene arsonist freak was running the country. I had to go to work but I couldn't risk public transit with a baby at home, so I started driving in like a typical Angeleno. A bright spot to the the traffic was hearing Lynch do the local weather reports. Even if the actual weather was lousy, toxic and smoky, suffocatingly hot, the sky a bleary blinding glare, his enthusiasm was infectious. I saw the beauty through his sincerity.
